Recipient Org: Description Autism and Nature was founded to help children with autism and related disabilities to engage with the countryside and nature. The most compelling benefits for this are: developing social (life) skills, enhancing well-being and supporting learning. We raise awareness of the benefits of engaging children with autism with the natural environment, and develop partnerships with special schools, local authorities, conservation organisations and autism charities. The organisation recently expanded its remit to include historic and cultural, as well as natural heritage. Children with autism are amongst the most socially vulnerable and excluded members of society; many have few opportunities to engage with local heritage in their everyday lives. Autism and Nature has published a series of eight guides to visiting the countryside and we recently produced three guides to visiting places of historical and cultural heritage, all to help parents, carers and teachers engage children with autism and related disabilities with their local heritage. Our most recent guide was ‘Exploring Essex’s Heritage: a guide for parents, carers and children with autism’, produced with the support of Essex Community Foundation amongst others. We also host educational visits to heritage places for children with autism and related disabilities from local special schools and write about these in our guides. for example, in our Essex heritage guide we wrote about a series of visits to Chelmsford Museum. We have produced illustrated ‘Alex and Rosie’ countryside story books for younger children with autism that use simple language supported by Widgit symbols and more recently, ‘Alex and Rosie’ colouring books. The stories and illustrations in ‘Alex and Rosie’s Adventures in Essex’, and other books, help children to learn about wildlife they might see and activities they might undertake in the countryside. Our colouring books, including ‘Alex and Rosie’s Essex Colouring Book’, engage children with the natural world through art. Our children’s countryside books complement our guides; the stories and illustrations help adults to engage children with a particular place; and the symbolised text and illustrations reinforce ideas and encourage autistic children to communicate more. We have not yet produced a story book designed to engage children with autism and related disabilities with historic and cultural heritage. In this project, we are proposing to produce our first children’s story book to engage children in Essex with historic and cultural places featured in our recent ‘Exploring Essex’s Heritage’ guide.
