Recipient Org: Description Essex Boys and Girls Clubs is a registered charity working in Essex, Thurrock, Southend and East London. Set up as part of the Boys' Club Movement and initially deeply involved with the development of Youth Football and Youth Boxing we remain true to our roots by supporting independent youth groups. These include mixed groups, boys own clubs and grassroots sports clubs. We work within our network of 140+ voluntary run community youth groups reaching 1000 members aged 10-18 years. Through the community spirit created through membership of clubs, this builds self esteem, develops character and reduces anti-social behaviour in their community. Club membership offers an alternative to the many dangers they face such as crime, alcohol and drugs. This is true early intervention work by thousands of volunteers. In support we take constructive mobile activities making extensive use of our Adventure Centres in Cumbria, Wales and Layer Marney. We also work with partner schools and local youth agencies to engage young people in character building projects which are then sustained in the long term by introductions to local youth clubs. A large proportion of our clubs engage young people in urban and deprived areas and provide them with meaningful and challenging opportunities. Our aim is to provide young people with somewhere to go and something to do as well as providing support and backup for the many volunteers who run these clubs and activities.
