Recipient Org: Description Colchester Gateway Clubs is an independent local charity established in 1997, Registered Charity Number 1063731. We work in North Essex, providing social clubs, activities, advocacy and support to people with learning disabilities and their families. We engage with around 250 people with learning disabilities each week, plus families, informal and paid carers. We receive no statutory funding, relying on entrance fees to our clubs, members’ contributions to activities, fund-raising activities, donations and grants. The people we support live in a society which does not always understand or accept their differences. Many of them present with behaviours which can be seen as different, threatening, or even aggressive. This means that it is not always comfortable for them to be in public places. In addition, the financial austerity of recent years has had a major impact on the benefits system and many of our members and their families are in financial need. Colchester Gateway Clubs have always sought to make a difference to the lives of people with learning disabilities and their families/informal carers. By providing affordable social clubs and leisure activities we want our members to have positive experiences, to have opportunities to develop friendships and, perhaps, closer relationships, in a safe environment where they can free to express themselves. We also support family members through the difficulties they face having one or more children with a learning disability. We provide four weekly social Clubs, two monthly music clubs, an Advocacy and Support Service, and Gateway Awards (similar to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme but tailored to the needs of people with learning disabilities. Our Advocacy and Support Project is available to people with Learning Disabilities and their families and informal carers. We provide a face in some of the poorest and most poverty-stricken areas of Essex. Jaywick, for example, is the poorest area of the UK and has a high number of individuals with learning disabilities and elderly relatives caring for them. Many of them are not known to statutory services and do not know that they are entitled to benefits and support. Our project makes referrals to the appropriate statutory and/or voluntary services and can be present to facilitate initial meetings. We also offer welfare benefit advice and help with completion of forms. Our first contact with clients is often at a critical point in their lives. In the past year this has included the breakdown of a relationship, pregnancy, eviction orders, physical illness, deterioration in mental health and the death of the main carer. Our aim in all of these cases is to work with the client to mitigate the immediate impact of the crisis and then to help them identify and achieve the best possible outcome.
