Recipient Org: Description Roman River Music combines a professional core with strong and broad volunteer support. Our mission is to make international quality culture accessible to everyone, to support artists, and to develop artforms. We have an excellent, and locally unique, track record of staging international quality arts festivals annually since 2000 to achieve these aims. We bring music, theatre, visual art, dance, spoken word, new work and largescale participatory projects to a diverse community. We encourage new collaborations, support young artists, break down barriers to engagement by performing in informal, unexpected spaces, and work hard to develop new audiences for the arts among communities with low engagement. We are creatively ambitious and international in outlook while being embedded in our community. We have enabled over 30,000 members of the local community to experience excellence in performing arts, inviting a vibrant diversity of performers (over 1,500 in total) including Nicola Benedetti, Seckou Keita, Maya Youssef, Lila Palmer, Natalie Clein, Joseph Toonga, Jon Boden, Chineke!, Benjamin Grosvenor, Marlena Devoe, Jamal Aliyev and Jonian Ilias Kadesha. In partnership with youth orchestras and local organisations, RR has created opportunities for over 6,500 young people to be actively involved with music, inviting top animateurs to inspire and unlock talent. We have developed or commissioned over 50 works (sometimes with Colchester Arts Centre, Dance East, Firstsite and the Minories) from composers, writers, visual and conceptual artists, choreographers and film-makers, creating new music to visual and conceptual art and sculpture, new music theatre and large-scale community works, as well as programming work by over 100 living creatives. Roman River has honed its operational expertise from delivering 20 festivals. The festival aims to - unlock local talent & creativity in the young people we work with, the local artists and performers who we support, and the musicians and performers we invite through new collaborations and commissions. - develop the skill & practice of both the myriad of performers who come and work together at the festival, and also our small festival team. Allow emerging artists from diverse backgrounds to develop their skill and talent in a supportive, relaxed and artistically ambitious context away from the big city, where we allow time for ideas, creativity and independent thought to flourish, and be mentored by world-class experienced performers. - widen horizons, give access to culture, inspire, engage, uplift and improve the mental wellbeing of the huge variety of people and diverse communities involved in the festival and our learning and participation programme, ranging from volunteers to young performers and our diverse audience - inspire the next generation through interactive, informal and relevant performances in over 12 local schools - create opportunities for over 1,000 young people to compose, perform or listen to music and get involved in the performing and visual arts - support local initiatives and businesses by attracting visitors to an international quality festival - engender a sense of pride in residents and improve the quality of life of everyone within reach of the festival
