Recipient Org: Description The agreed Mission statement and Purpose of the Epping Forest Youth Council (EFYC) “To represent the views of young people and see they are put into action.” The Youth Council is non-party political and does not affiliate itself to any political group or party and is made up of 25 young people who represent their peers within the district. The members of the Youth Council are all residents of the district and meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues considered to be important by young people. Epping Forest Youth Council enables young people to have a voice in their local district and to put forward the views and concerns of other local young people. Since its’ inception, the Youth Council has been very proactive in developing a range of projects and programmes to benefit and support other young people across the Epping Forest District. Projects include anti-bullying, emotional health & wellbeing (MiLife) and drugs awareness campaigns. Anti-Bullying - the effects of Bullying can affect anyone. And Victims can suffer in silence. Some of the effects and results of bullying include: •Feeling afraid, depression / sadness, unable to sleep / having nightmares, performing badly at school / work, not attending school, anxiety, loss in self-esteem and suicide. EFYC raised awareness of bullying and signposted information for the victims and families of victims to the numerous support services and helplines offering expert advise, support and guidance. via the USB wristbands and EFYC web page, EFYC promoted the #URNotAlone campaign, in schools, teachers posted their own photos on the EFYC facebook pledging their support to the campaign. MiLife is a project for secondary aged pupils aged 11 – 18 which promotes a positive view of mental health and equips them to build their emotional resilience so that they can stay safe and well. Now in it’s third year of delivery over 10,000 young people have had access to this mental health support and education. Sadly poor mental health is still a national issue facing young people. EFYC were absolutely delighted to win the National Crimebeat Award 2018 for their MiLife project. Drugs Awareness project. Epping Forest Youth Councillors consulted with 3177 school pupils that they represent and they also received concerned reports from the adult Councillors and their constituents about drug taking amongst young people. The impact on the community and environment caused by the drug taking and discarded NO2 canisters, were identified as major concerns facing people living in the Epping Forest district. In response to this the Youth Council set up 3 sub projects to address the issue; 1) Clean up of Nitrous Oxide cannisters day 2) Drugs awareness poster campaign 3) Anonymous survey Nationally, drug related deaths in the UK rose to its highest point in 2017. Reassuringly most young people in the Epping Forest District are not taking drugs. Of the 3177 participants surveyed 2818 had not tried drugs 88.7% 359 had said they had tried drugs 11.3% The 11.3% that have taken drugs in Epping Forest is far below the national average of 24%. This indicates that as a local community we are in many ways effectively combating drug misuse. We must not become complacent, many of the findings were very encouraging, that local drug use is significantly below the national average, and we should take pride in the fact that excellent work is already being done in Epping Forest district to tackle this issue, however, there is still work to be done. Service providers and funders need to continue their work to tackle the causes of drug use. One important finding from the survey was that boredom is a much greater factor in causing drug use than peer pressure, challenging the traditional narrative that the way to stop drug use is to encourage young people to ‘just say no’. The EFYC would like to see the work and funding continue to raise awareness of the danger that drugs pose to young people. As EFYC’s drug awareness project ends, they believe that they have been successful in raising awareness of the danger of drugs – particularly in promoting the idea of ‘gateway drugs’ and discouraging the use of so-called ‘legal highs’. Next Steps: Lobbying Central Government Given the widespread damage being done by NO2 and its worrying rise in popularity, EFYC urges Council Members and other stakeholders to join them in lobbying the Government and MPs to restrict the sale of NO2 to under 18s. The Youth Council believe that proof of age should be required by online retailers, in recognition of the fact that NO2 can have a much more destructive effect than substances like alcohol for which restrictions are already in place. Full report available. Not only do EFYC design and deliver projects but they are often consulted with to be the voice of young people - including Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, the Local Plan & NHS services.
