Recipient Org: Description | The Volunteer Police Cadets is the nationally recognised police uniformed youth group throughout the UK. The purpose of the VPC is not to recruit police officers of the future, but to encourage the spirit of adventure and good citizenship amongst its members. We believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive regardless of his or her background. We encourage young people from all backgrounds to join the VPC, including those who may be vulnerable to the influences of crime and social exclusion. The Castle Point and Rochford unit is the newest in Essex, but has proved immensely popular and is already one of the most successful. We have retained 24 of the 35 original applicants and have recruited a brand new intake for January which will double our numbers. We meet every Tuesday evening and cadets take part in marching and drill, a formal lesson and then a team building and fun activity afterwards. The cadets can request and plan that part of the evening themselves. Cadets are expected to attend regularly, be dressed in full uniform as appropriate, which they maintain themselves to the Essex Police standard. In addition our unit organises regular events and activities outside the weekly unit nights, to expand the cadets experiences, improve skills and confidence, and to give benefit to our wider community. These include: - VPC annual parade and Remembrance Sunday parades - Support at community events such as town shows, Xmas lights switch on, firework events, community meetings, marshalling junior park runs, - Duke of Edinburg Award, 14 of our cadets recently completed their bronze awards and were presented them by the Assistant Chief Constable - Days out, including visits to 10 Downing St, Westminster Cathedral, Parliament, Police Headquarters, - Activities with other VPC units and youth organisations, eg VPC summer camp & joint cadet nights with Army Cadets - Initiatives with Essex Police, crime prevention patrols, burglary prevention visits, Halloween reassurance visits - Trips abroad, including visits to the battlefields of Ypres and taking part in the Menin Gate procession In addition to formal activities, the cadets enjoy social activities together, one of the cadets recently received a Jack Petchey volunteering award for her contribution to this side of the VPC Unit. Cadets contribute a weekly subscription and pay for all activities and trips. We have a hardship fund for those in difficulty or unable to contribute the full amounts. |
