Recipient Org: Description To provide opportunities currently free of charge for young people aged 8 to 16 living in communities in North Essex close to the River Stour in a variety of water sports, principally sailing based, for those that would not normally have such opportunities. To target those young people and their families who would not normally otherwise participate in such activities through active and direct engagement with local primary and secondary schools and through targeted social media campaigns. To broaden horizons and engender self confidence in those taught and participating in a variety of water sports activities and to offer pathways to regular and active participation in water sports. To demonstrate that active participation in individual and team water sports activities is fulfilling and rewarding and offers meaningful alternatives to non participation and inactive lifestyles. Delivery of regular RYA supported sail training activities and certified courses by qualified instructors in dinghies on the Stour at Manningtree from the fire station provided by Essex Fire and Rescue Services station used as HQ base. Delivery of kayak training through a local partner, Ipswich Canoe Club. Provision of Swallows and Amazons experiences amidst seal colonies on traditional longboats on the Walton backwaters from groups of local primary school children from Birch Hall Adventures. Commissioning of trips aboard a traditional East coast fishing smack, Pioneer, providing experience of seafaring skills and learning about marine life and its environment. Chartering from Sea-Change of a newly built and equipped replica engineless Thames barge for a group of young bargee trainees on a week long passage off the East Coast learning sailing and life experiences under the command of a highly experienced barge skipper. Commissioning of an offshore yachting adventure, Offshore, to the near continent aboard a 50 foot Oyster yacht for a group learning offshore sailing skills over a week's passage. In our first year of operation we created an individual membership of 180 young people, provided 435 unique experiences for 326 individual young people. All free of charge. This exceeded our target ambition.
