Recipient Org: Description Our Eating Disorder Charity, PEDS, established in April 2014 provides help and support to sufferers of Eating Disorders and their families and carers. Eating Disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness and early intervention is key to helping someone with their recovery. Our charity places great emphasis on reaching children, young people and adults and the earliest point possible and we see our service users for assessment, 1:1, outreach and group work in a number of settings. PEDS provides support throughout the duration of the eating disorder which results in long term help for those who would otherwise be subject to lengthy waiting lists or declined help by statutory services. Our focus is to improve quality of life and help the individual and their affected families to manage the symptoms of the eating disorder. This involves PEDS providing education and training and support to professionals regarding early warning signs and symptoms and management, to organisations such as GPs, schools, school nurses, Counsellors and clubs including Guides, sports and recreational facilities. PEDS is run by mental health and paediatric nurses who have specialised in Eating Disorders for over 18yrs between them. PEDS has a number of volunteers who give up their time to help run our carers group, fundraise and raise awareness of Eating Disorders. Though PEDS primary focus is helping those suffering from Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder, PEDS also supports a number of individuals who also experience depression, autism, anxiety and OCD. Over the past year, PEDS has received over 120 referrals from sufferers, their families and professionals / organisations looking for help for their service user. On average PEDS supports 20-25 people each week and a unique email and telephone / skype service is utilised by service users and their carers, in addition to the 1:1 weekly sessions and the monthly carers group. The overall aims of PEDS is to improve quality of life for the sufferer and their families, improve overall health and wellbeing and to help the individual develop coping strategies to better manage their illness.
