Recipient Org: Description Citizens Advice Braintree Halstead and Witham provides free, confidential, impartial and non-judgmental advice to residents of the Braintree District. Our goal is to help everyone find a way forward. We aim to work with people to try and fix the underlying cause of their problems, give them confidence to take action and help them become more knowledgeable about their rights. Our advice helps to prevent problems from escalating and enables people to regain control of their lives. We are an independent local charity and part of the Citizens Advice network across England and Wales. Advice is delivered through a Phone First Service which operates Monday – Friday 10 am to 4 pm. For those clients who need follow-up work, we offer booked appointments. The Charity operates from its office in Witham and there is a Braintree Outreach Service. For the year 2019-20 we assisted a total of 1,484 clients. An overall number of 4,692 issues were addressed and 4,401activities undertaken on behalf of clients and 1,537 cases opened. In addition to these numbers, there were 487 clients who presented with simple enquiries, many of whom were signposted to other services. The top five areas of advice for the year were: • Benefits 38.4% • Debt 15.2% • Family and Relationships 9% • Housing 7.4% • Employment 7.15% We are heavily reliant upon volunteers for the delivery of our advice service. For the year 2019-20, there were 23 volunteers providing an average of 142 hours per week. All advisors undertake a training programme of about six months. On-going training ensures they are kept up-to-date with legislative changes. The Charity has 10 paid staff, all part time. Their roles cover management, training and specialist project delivery e.g Money Advice Service, Help to Claim (universal credit) Service.
