Recipient Org: Description • Shoebox Theatre is a not-for-profit company run by its volunteer member/directors. • Aims: to promote community participation in and engagement with the creative arts through the medium of theatre. We aim to be inclusive; • There are currently 7 volunteer director/members of Shoebox, three of whom are professional actors and four who are community volunteers. We have an associated drama practitioner based in Lichfield who organises activities there under the Shoebox banner; • We offer professionally led projects, workshops and performance, with volunteer support, to local schools, residential homes and community groups. We hold open, informal lunch and play-reading events with director/members and others who express an interest in taking part; • We run open access drama (and occasional film-making) workshops on a weekly basis with a small intergenerational and multi-able group. Currently the group comprises 12 members, the youngest 13 and the oldest 78 - a mix of neurotypical and those who have a physical, mental or learning disability. It is this group for whom this grant application is made, to undertake a new performance project, which builds on current activity; • We have a participatory approach to creative activity, including everyone involved in a project in its design, creative content and development. This promotes co-operative discussion, decision-making and helps to improve personal confidence, transferable skills and friendship across different ages and abilities. • Material is devised and performed by workshop participants with professional guidance, supported by volunteer community actors, and plays to families and audiences in Tamworth and the local area. It has been involved in TameFest since 2015.
