Recipient Org: Description Jacari’s objective is to promote equality of opportunity and aspiration for disadvantaged minority ethnic children and young people in Oxford, age 6-16, who do not speak English as their first language. We aim to do this by increasing their: • Language ability and other academic skills • General confidence and motivation • Ability to engage with and contribute to school life and the wider community • Employment prospects in the longer term Initially established in 1956 as an organisation aimed at tackling racial intolerance, we have evolved over the past fifty years into a one-to-one home tutoring programme. We train and match around 200 volunteers per year (from the two Universities in Oxford) with local children who need help with reading, writing and speaking English. Most of these children come from immigrant families and some have recently arrived into the country as asylum seekers or refugees. English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers in our 17 partner schools recommend children to us based on their need. Each volunteer visits their pupil in their own home for an hour a week, tutoring them in English and acting as a mentor, as well as meeting their parents and often becoming good friends with the whole family, promoting wider social inclusion. The personal, one-on-one attention within a familiar environment for the child can reap great benefits. We put on educational and fun events for the children and their volunteers, including trips to local museums, wildlife parks etc. We support volunteers through provision of advice sessions, a well-stocked library, teaching seminars and social events. In addition we run morning English classes for the mothers of the children we support, at two high-need primary schools, which are designed to support them in their communication with schools, health services and community life.
