Schools Plus - engaging male volunteers (360G-OCF-A480042)

£4,995
Recipient Organization

Pilot targeted outreach to male university students, with the aim of increasing the number of male volunteers across School Plus to 100 by April 2019 and reaching a further 300 beneficiaries through tutoring one-to-one and in small groups. In order to effectively design, market, and run these volunteering opportunities, we will seek input from male university students themselves. During May and June 2018 we will hold focus groups to learn from the ideas and experiences of current male volunteers, as well as individuals with little or no social action experience. Using these insights we will develop a tailored recruitment and retention strategy ready for the new academic year in October 2018. We will seek ongoing feedback from all stakeholders as we pilot this approach, and then embed these learnings in order to increase the engagement of male volunteers across our other activities from April 2019 onwards.

Recipient Org: Description Oxford Hub is the centre for social action in Oxford. Our aim is to engage university students and residents in social and environmental issues, and ultimately support them to shape a better city. In 2016-17 we supported over 500 volunteers to take action across 30 community projects, and ran events reaching 1383 attendees. Across the city, volunteers run activities in order to tackle educational disadvantage, connecting with older people, supporting langugage learning for refugees and new migrants, mentoring children referred to us by social services and much more. At the core of our new theory of change, launching in September 2019, there are two key principles to our work. Firstly, we are place-based, supporting communities locally. Secondly, we are relationship-based, enabling people who wouldn't otherwise have met to connect with each other. In addition to our established volunteering opportunities, we also support individuals to have a social impact through placements. These are structured programmes which recruit and train participants so that they can share their skills with local charities either as interns, impact measurement consultants, or young trustees. Finally, through our Social Enterprise Awards and participatory grant making we support individuals to launch their own initiatives.
