Project Description - Detailed I) We will continue with our commitment to hold the Summer Mela for the 10th time in our history as an organisation. As a replacement for the ‘Fun in the Parks’ events which took place in various City Council Parks c. 10 years ago, we have filled a gap by providing an annual ‘fun-filled’ event which caters for all sections of the community and brings together a range of public, private and voluntary sector bodies. Interest and participation by the communities has built up over the years and we want to retain this interest and build on the principles of safer and cohesive communities and community participation II) We will hire the Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre for the event, set up a stage for performers, get appropriate sound and lighting systems and draw up a programme that reflects the arts and culture of various local communities. Both well-established resident groups, school children and youth clubs, women’s groups and refugee communities will be invited to showcase their arts, music, and dance. III) We will arrange for performances from various well-known professional artists who can run inter-active folk dance, Bollywood dance and drumming work-shops which will encourage active participation by all age groups. This may lead to request for a series of workshops in the BBLeys and other Community Centres. We will aim to break down barriers and inhibitions by having OHTCCP members and volunteers at hand to discreetly encourage active involvement without undue pressure.
