| Recipient Org: Description | The PSU is a registered charity working in Bristol Civil and Family Justice Centre and 12 further cities in England and Wales. We provide practical help and emotional support to people going through court proceedings without a lawyer. Our aim is to enable people who are disadvantaged by a lack of legal advice engage with the court system and so obtain access to justice. People come to the PSU at times of crisis. We work to help them understand the processes and feel calm and in control of their time in court. Our vision is for everyone facing court alone to have access to a PSU volunteer. Our volunteers offer free, one-to-one help, tailored to the needs of each individual, for as long as they need. PSU volunteers empower people at times of extreme stress, enabling them to present their case to the best of their ability. Volunteers explain what will happen in court, help people fill out complicated legal forms and help them plan what they will say to the judge. In court, volunteers give practical and moral support. Having a PSU volunteer at their side makes a real difference to those we help. Clients tell us repeatedly that we help them cope with their time in court better. The result is they are much more likely to access justice. |
