Recipient Org: Description Our charity Read Around Bath has as its aim to bring socially disadvantaged people together through reading whether they are disadvantaged through low mental health, old age, physical difficulties or homelessness or a combination of any of these. Reading Agency research shows 'books change lives' and we aim to build a sense of community and reduce social isolation and loneliness. We also aim to enhance well being and increase confidence, articulacy and motivation. The Liverpool organisation Get into Reading which is a city-wide initiative has inspired us and they have given advice, run workshops for us. Their reseach also bears out the finding that reading and listening to reading with the opportunity to discuss the material provides community focus, well being, confidence and reduces social isolation. Volunteers, often with a background in teaching, select reading material appropriate to each group, mostly led by the group and individual tastes and wishes. The session has a variety of reading aloud periods with equal space to discuss what the group like/dislike/anything nostalgic that occurs to them to share with others. Poetry and prose is shared, often members supply their own material from the library. The session ends with a cheerful poem.
