Recipient Org: Description | The Misfits Theatre Company UK is a unique Bristol based theatre and social group, led by and for People with Learning Disabilities (PWLD). We evolved from a drama group at a local day centre formed in 2000 to be an established Community Interest Company in 2010 and more recently registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (March 2016). Our mission is to improve the life opportunities and aspirations of PWLD and to challenge their discrimination in society. We aim to enable PWLD to be creative, have fun and reach their full potential through participation, performance, volunteering and employment. We use theatre to draw out the subtleties of discriminatory practices and the impact they have on the lives of people who experience discrimination and inequality, challenging perceptions and practices. Our regular activities are: -Drama & Movement Workshops: playing and devising original work based on people's own experiences and interests, regularly performing to the public. -Creative Training: tailor-made for professionals in the public, private and voluntary sectors, using theatre to challenge perceptions and improving their practices. -Rhythm of the Night: a monthly inclusive nightclub for PWLD, where they can co-produce events and socialise with their families and friends in a safe space. |
