Recipient Org: Description Openstorytellers works to enrich and empower the lives of people who are socially excluded because of learning and communication disabilities.Our overall aims are: To reduce the isolation of people with learning disabilities and those with profound and multiple learning disabilities To encourage memory and recall through a structured engagement with narrative To increase confidence, self-esteem and self-awareness; To promote effective ways in which others in the community can interact with people with learning disabilities; To provide social spaces to develop inter-personal skills for children and young adults with learning disabilities; To increase social participation and promote greater inclusion in society. Currently our work covers five main themes: Friendship – supporting peer to peer friendships through creative social clubs, music workshops, storysharing circles, film nights and supported trips. Life Skills – supporting individuals with vital life skills such as money management, food and well-being, friendship and staying safe in the community. Being Part of the Community – speak up groups, advocacy support, community participation and campaigning. Work Support – learning transferable work skills to support people into volunteering, employment or social enterprise activity. The Openstorytellers - a professional user-led company of storytellers with learning disabilities. They perform at numerous festivals, events and community spaces throughout the year, spreading their message, creativity and inspiration to wide audiences. At the heart of everything we do is the concept of Storysharing®, a pioneering communication method based on personal narrative that empowers individuals to have their voices heard both locally and in wider society.
