Recipient Org: Description 1. First established in 1888, I CAN are now experts in speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). This is the most common childhood condition people have never heard of: 1.4million children and young people in the UK have a language disorder they will not grow out of. Furthermore, up in some areas of deprivation across the UK, as many as 50% of children start school without the language they need for learning. 2. Speech, language and communication underpin everything we do: making our needs known; expressing our thoughts and emotions; interacting with others. They are crucial for literacy and learning, for building and maintaining relationships, for succeeding in life. 3. Often unidentified, and therefore with no support, children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) will find life unspeakably hard, with negative impact seeping through every aspect, from educational attainment, behaviour and mental health, to employment and life chances. 4. Key evidence includes: a. One in four children (23%) who struggled with language at age five do not reach the expected standard of English at age 11 b. Only 12% of children with a language difficulty achieve expected levels of reading, writing and maths at the end of primary school (compared to 53% of classmates) c. The attainment at GCSE of pupils with SLCN is significant lower than their peers, with only 15.4% of pupils with SLCN gaining 5 A*-C grades (compared to 57.4% of all pupils nationally) d. Two thirds of children at risk of being excluded from school have language difficulties e. 45% of young people referred to mental health services have communication difficulties f. 60% of young offenders have language difficulties g. 50% employers say they are not satisfied with school leavers’ communication skills h. 88% of long term unemployed men have SLCN . 5. I CAN solely helps children and young people with SLCN aged 0 to 19 find their voice. We do so: a. via our advice line for parents and practitioners b. by delivering evidence-based programmes in children centres, nurseries and schools c. by developing innovative approaches to solve the problem d. by running two specialist schools e. and by raising awareness of the issue, so it is better understood and addressed.
