Recipient Org: Description | We are a local parent-volunteer group which provides support to families across both Bexhill and Hastings with children and young adults who suffer from the life-long disability of autism. Life with autism (ASD) can be extremely isolating, both for the person with autism and their loved ones. Many parents feel over-whelmed by their child's diagnosis and feel unable to get the support they need. Sadly, some families find it easier to stay at home and avoid public places where they feel self-conscious and isolated. Our group's mission is two-fold*; 1) Family activities - children with autism struggle to access mainstream activities due to their anxiety levels, lack of understanding and sensory issues, these can all sometimes manifest into challenging behaviours. To overcome this the group organises family activities in the School holidays, exclusively hiring venues. These activities include, trips to local farms, soft-play centres and swimming. 2) Family I carer support - we hold regular support group meetings, so our members have the opportunity to talk to other families and share what they are feeling and the everyday challenges they face. The group also regularly invites professionals and speakers for expert advice on specific topics, for example, 'how to best communicate with a child who is non-verbal'. *Both of the above missions are paid or subsidised by the groups fundraising efforts. |
