Recipient Org: Description Rockinghorse is an independent charity working in Sussex. Formed in 1967 as an appeal to provide the first neo-natal baby incubator outside of London, for the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, we have since grown to become one of the most well-known local children's charities. We support sick and disabled children and young people throughout Sussex and the south-east of England. Working in partnership with local hospitals - primarily the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital and the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (both in Brighton) - and respite centres and other specialist services, projects focus on improving children’s emotional and physical well-being, while providing additional support services for parents and carers. Rockinghorse only adopts projects which have the full backing of medical professionals and seek to address one or more of these issues: - Improving children’s self-esteem and self-confidence - Increasing children’s opportunities to socialise and interact with others - Improving emotional and physical well-being - Ensuring children can develop skills and sensory awareness to their full abilities - Involving children in activities they would not otherwise have access to - Creating a fun and relaxed environment that ‘lets children be children’ Recent successful projects include a multi-sensory room for the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, a RETCAM scanning machine to detect blindness in premature babies on the Trevor Mann Baby Unit, and the creation of a specialised trauma room within the A&E department of the children’s hospital. We have also provided therapeutic spa baths for Tudor House children’s respite centre, sensory equipment for Seaside View Child Development Centre, and drop-in gym sessions for a community group supporting families with disabled children.
