| Recipient Org: Description | Little Green Pig (LGP) is a creative writing and mentoring charity, based in Brighton & Hove, which focuses on engaging 7-18 year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds on a programme of free projects. We believe that everyone, whatever their background, has a right to write and needs a gym for their imagination. We know that writing promotes good communication, develops empathy, builds health communities and grows self-confidence and self-worth. We aim to provide a safe environment for all young people to get creative, supported by high numbers of volunteer mentors providing one-to-one support. Our main objective is to give opportunities to the young people in the community who need them most including those from disadvantaged backgrounds or living in areas of high deprivation. We also encourage community cohesion by recruiting and training local people as volunteers. With the support of a number of local and national funding organisations including Arts Council England, Awards for All, Sussex Community Foundation, the Pebble Trust and the Goodall Foundation, we have now worked with over 2,500 young people to date on a variety of projects in and out of schools, the majority who are living in areas of Brighton & Hove which are in the top 10% of deprivation in the country. We have just come to the end of our best year yet in which we worked with over 850 children and teenagers on projects ranging from devising a crime drama to writing a travel guide to Brighton & Hove and a term-long residency at a primary school in Whitehawk (see http://tinyurl.com/mn68h7c). We have worked hard to develop relationships with schools, families, organisations and individuals in our target areas in the city and look forward to building on this in the coming year. |
