Recipient Org: Description | The Real Junk Food Project Brighton's mission is to take food destined for landfill from food producers and distributors and turn it into healthy nutritious meals which we serve to the community at cafes we run in three spaces across the city, two churches and one community centre. We operate a pay as you feel system whereby people are encouraged to pay what they feel the food is worth in any way they can - this may be by making a donation of money, or volunteering, or providing other skills and services to benefit the scheme. Everyone is welcome and just as important as the food we save and serve, is bringing the community together to share a meal together and build connections across the communal tables. We use approximately six tonnes of so called waste food monthly, food which cannot be sold but is still fit for human consumption. We currently serve 500 meals every week across the city and also have a food hub where we store and sort the food we have received from supermarkets and other food producers. In addition to this work we also do some catering for events. We charge for this work and the income we receive from this, we invest back into the delivery of the community food project. One of our core strengths is that people from all backgrounds come together at our cafés and connect with one another. We signpost many other organisations here too so that people can access other services and resources that they may need now or in the future. We operate under the umbrella of The Real Junk Food Project and although we are a part of the global Real Junk Food Project network, we work completely autonomously. |
