Woodland for a biodiverse future (360G-WCVA-25742)

The 17ha Cefn Cenarth nature reserve is part of a swathe of hillside woodland near Pantydwr. Rich in birdlife, mosses and lichen, it was historically managed for the local tanning industry and this has left stands of spindly oaks of a similar age and lacks the diversity of a natural woodland. We will employ someone just starting a conservation career as a project officer and support the development of their practical and project management skills. They will work with volunteers to investigate the historical management of these woodlands, map vegetation, survey wildlife and make habitat improvements. With expert advice, important trees will be chosen and selective felling undertaken to promote mature trees and a more biodiverse woodland in the future. We will use the site for demonstrating how other landowners can create more diverse woodlands. We will run guided walks and talks, organise family and group tree-seed collecting and planting activities, write articles and provide displays for local events. We will also provide landowner advice to explain the impact of historical management and how to create a biodiverse woodland for the future.
