PhD Training Programme for Clinicians at the University of Cambridge: a post-genomic study of inflammatory bowel disease. (360G-Wellcome-087007_Z_08_Z)
The project is integrating clinical and laboratory data to examine, using microarrays, whether gene expression signatures in subsets of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with inflammatory bowel disease can be correlated with disease behaviour both in terms of disease course, including relapse rate, and treatment response. A correlation has been identified in other diseases (e.g. small vessel vasculitis) and if a similar correlation can be identified in IBD, it may be useful in terms of predicting disease course and therapeutic responses, which would allow individualisation of treatment. If a gene expression profile is shown to correlate with disease behaviour, it will then be compared with the data from the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium genome-wide association scan in order to determine whether SNPs in those genes that are differentially expressed are associated with patterns of disease behaviour. It will also be possible to investigate how such gene expression profiles may interact with the identified IBD susceptibility genes. The aim is to deepen our understanding of the aetiology and pathogenesis of these important medical problems and enable treatments to be tailored appropriately to individual patients at the time of diagnosis.
