Responsibility and Morality within Personality Disorder. (360G-Wellcome-090768_Z_09_Z)

£141,927

My research aims to integrate analytic philosophy with scientific research into, and clinical knowledge and treatment of, personality disorder, in order to understand what it is and the place of morality and responsibility within it. My principal theoretical aim is to draw on my philosophical expertise and my first-hand knowledge of clinical data and treatment to: (i) establish the extent to which personality disorder is a failure of virtue; (ii) establish the extent to which people suffering from personality disorder are responsiblefor their behaviour and character; (iii) develop an account of responsibility that admits of degrees and marries the possibility of free will with scientific knowledge of the aetiology and neural bases of personality; (iv) assess the place of morality and science within psychiatry; (v) determine the connection between self-love and esteem, and the capacity for rational decision-making and virtue; and finally (vi) assess the policy implications ofmy research. I intend to publish a series of articles in leading philosophy and psychiatry journals and edited collections. My principal practical aim is to justify and promote a clinical approach to personality disorder that treats patients with compassion and empathy, yet as responsible and autonomous agents. I intend to communicate my research both tohigh-level policymakers and to ground-level clinicians, via consultation, lectures, editorials, media engagement, and provision of training.
