This is an application to fund a Community Engagement and Ethics Coordinator in the Thailand Major Overseas Programme for two years. (360G-Wellcome-105032_Z_14_Z)

£190,068

The Thailand Overseas Programme has more than three decades of experience in conducting clinical trials in resourced limited settings in Asia and Africa. Increasingly we recognise that engaging with the communities we work in is essential to the success of these trials, regardless of geography and discipline. Equally important, is identifying and addressing ethical issues related to medical research on our context, for example, issue around consent, child assent, compensation and anicillary care. This has compelled us to work in research ethics, and also look for innovative ways to ocnduct good quality research that complies with international standards and takes into consideration local normsand cultural senstivities. This work largely involves active engagement with communities we serve through a variety of strategies e.g. informal discussions with the community leaders, formal discussions with officials, public meetings, educational activities, and the establishment of community advisory boards. The CTSG's work in ethics and community engagement has grown significantly over the past few years. The Community Engagement and Ethics Coordinator will have an important role of bringing many activities together to develop a coordinated research portfolio within the Programme. The Programme wants a coherent approach to ethics and community engagement to improve the conduct of trials for the benefit of both the participants and researchers; and to share best practices within the Programme and internationally. The Programme increasingly views ethics and community engagemnt not as a byproduct of clinical research but as a mainstream activity and a research module in its own right.
