DBT Wellcome Trust India Alliance - continuation of jointly-funded Biomedical Research Career Programme (360G-Wellcome-218696_Z_19_Z)

In January 2017, Wellcome in partnership with the DBT, conducted a review of the India Alliance. The Review Committee recommended that Wellcome approves £40m of funding for a further 5-year phase of the programme subject to the implementation of?their?recommendations (see BOG Paper). At the 10-11 April 2017 meeting, the Wellcome Board of Governors approved, in principle, up to £40m for a further five years of the initiative from April 2019 (Agenda item 8). In March 2019 the Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved the continuation of the Biomedical Research Career Programme (BRCP), and Wellcome Trust (WT) / DBT India Alliance beyond its initial 10-year term (2008-09 to 2018-29) to a new five-year phase (2019-20 to 2023-24) with Department of Biotechnology (DBT) increasing its commitment to two times that of Wellcome. The total financial implication will be Rs. 1092 crore with DBT and WT contributing Rs.728 crore and Rs.364 crore respectively. The ratio of Wellcome: DBT funding will change from 1:1 to 1:2 for Phase 3.
