Rose Community (360G-ocf-a061600000lwF9R)

OAC would like to run an event for our Rose Community, a network for survivors and people who care, set up in July 2015. OAC has run 7 events for the Rose Community to promote integration, education and mutual support. The grant will be used to fund an event to showcase the inter-generational film created by young people during OAC's FGM and Film Studies project (running from September to December 2016). At this event, young film-makers from FGM and non-FGM communitiies will present the film they have created to their peers, parents, guardians, teachers, members of the Rose Community and the public. The film will focus on the difficult inter-generational conversations which need to happen within families and communities to stop the cycle of abuse. The event will include talks by the film-makers and survivors of FGM. The film screening event is crucial to extend the reach of the anti-FGM message to the wider community and bring those who are influential in the community into the conversation. By making the screening of the film a community event, young people will demonstrate how other young people can become anti-FGM champions and help end FGM in a generation. Please note that this application is for the funding of the screening event rather than the film-making process for which funding has been secured. Additionally, a public screening of the film will empower families from FGM communities to access help and advice and raise awareness in their communities. The young film-makers will see the impact of their work and are likely to engage in further advocacy and activisim at their schools. When OAC ran our schools booklet project last year, for example, young people were inspired to return to school and facilitate a lesson on FGM to their peer group and create a film without adult help. Further information about our school champions can be found here: http://oxfordagainstcutting.org/schools-champions/ Ultimately this event will convey to potential victims of abuse that they are not without sources of help, while also encouraging attendees of all ages to take the initiative in having the difficult conversations needed to prevent the practice from occurring. OAC plans to run the event on / close to the UN Zero Tolerance to FGM Day, 6 February to help generate publicity to raise further awareness about FGM.
