Young people are often one of the key priorities for regeneration and social inclusion programmes, however they are often excluded from engaging in the programmes in a meaningful way. Recent studies have found the need to find better ways to engage with young people in community decision-making. In the West Midlands, programmes such as the Birmingham Community Empowerment Network involving Young People's strategy, is seeking to increase the involvement of this priority group in community networks.

Stay and Play 06 Aug 2007

The project, launched by Community Integration Partnership Limited, will target isolated and vulnerable families with children under eight years old. Six outreach play centres will be provided in Coventry, Edgbaston, Ladywood, Handsworth, and Winson Green where family groups from across the community can access childcare services and enjoy a range of social and communication play activities.

This project aims to establish a community volunteering scheme for young people aged 11-21 years old (up to 25 for those with special needs) in Sutton Coldfield. This project will operate with a current Streetwise Project, which uses youth workers on the streets to direct young people into positive activites and support the development of volunteering initiatives and actively seek local opportunities for volunteering.

IMPACT Project 05 Dec 2007

This project aims to build on the work of the Birmingham Local Development Agencies Network to improve the quality, reach and sustainability of infrastructure support to Birmingham's VCS. The project involves three strands of delivery. BVCS will develop the network to improve referrals, expand membership and raise standards and it plans to increase public sector understanding and support for the network. It will set up four pilot projects to test the impact and sustainability of different delivery models.
