Towards a worker for the North East to recruit older volunteers.

This is the expansion of a project supporting volunteers aged 50 plus to run activities for vulnerable older people to improve health and well-being. These have previously included art classes, creative writing, yoga and computer club. The group will expand across the city, recruiting more volunteers, supporting more than 800 new people and establishing a Men’s Network to encourage older men to socialise regularly. It will also extend its HealthLink scheme to help older people get to medical appointments.

Young Voices (Volunteering Opportunities in Community Environments) 11 Oct 2006

Community Healthy Living Advisor Volunteers 22 Jun 2006

The Manchester branch of Community Service Volunteers runs a range of projects that encourage people to take up learning via its Media Clubhouse. With this award it will deliver workshops, led by a qualified nutritionist, aimed at individuals who want to become volunteer healthy living advisors. The volunteers will be recruited from groups with multiple disadvantages as well as minority groups based in and around the City Centre.

Operation Strongbow 13 Feb 2008

This project in Stockton-on-Tees, based on successful previous work in Middlesbrough, is a volunteer-led initiative to support older people at risk of distraction burglary. Volunteers will visit vulnerable and older people in their homes, or in community settings such as day centres, to empower them to avoid doorstep crime. Older people will be alerted to the types of tricks used, simple steps they can take to avoid being victims, and the importance of reporting any incidents to the police.

CSV Vocal Project 15 Aug 2012

This grant will expand the volunteer project for people with learning disabilities into new parts of the county, offering a programme of training, volunteering and supported employment using community mentors. Called the Vocal Project, participants work with community volunteers who help them to access training and social events. As their confidence around people and skills develop, they will then gradually move into volunteering placements either in a group or an individual setting.

This new project by CSV aims to change the lives of three groups of older Londoners. Firstly there are those aged between 50 - 66, unemployed, and the aim is to engage them in learning to be leaders (Volunteer Organisers) of voluntary activities for their peers. The transferable skills they will gain, including improved IT skills, will enhance employment opportunies with the option of taking further learning or volunteering elsewhere.

The Stepping Stones Project 14 Sep 2004

The Stepping Stones Project addresses a gap in service provision for homeless people in Barnet. The project will operate on Sunday and Bank Holidays to complement a week-day service run by Homeless Action in Barnet at the same location. Homeless people will be provided with meals and supported to access services in areas such as health, personal hygiene and drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Volunteers will receive training to help broaden their experience and develop their skills.
