Recipient Org: Description Home-Start Elmbridge (HSE) is a charity and company limited by guarantee. It is a preventative organisation aiming to offer support to vulnerable families in the local community, before these families get to the point of a crisis or breakdown. With this early intervention HSE prevents children going into care, prevents anti-social behaviour and relieves pressure on already over stretched services. HSE recruits, trains and supports volunteers who themselves have parenting experience, so that they can offer one-to-one practical and emotional support to families and children in their own homes, for as long as the support is needed. All volunteers attend a 9-week preparation course. The families that are supported are very often subjected to one or more stress factors including poor mental or physical health, physical or learning disabilities, domestic abuse, and parental drug or alcohol dependency. In addition to these, HSE supports children living in lone parent families and families where the parents are struggling to cope due to low income, social isolation and postnatal depression. HSE aims to help parents to give their children the best possible start in life by improving the ability of parents to care and provide for the health and social needs of their families. Any family can be referred for support, as long as there is at least one child under the age of five. HSE receives referrals from a wide range of professionals including Health Visitors. However, families can also self-refer. HSE is based in Walton-on-Thames and established in 2000. HSE is part of Home Start UK which is a network of local Home Start Groups. HSE is managed by 6 Trustees and employs 7 part-time staff. There are 46 volunteers working with HSE.
