The charity provides individually tailored support to approximately 1,000 families each year. The service is provided through the charity's eight teams of Family Support Workers, each operating from bases across the country. Support lasts from diagnosis throughout treatment, with the overall aim being to keep life as normal as possible for the whole family and to provide help and support to try to reduce some of the pressures. This can include the following:_x000D_ - Helping with practical tasks in the home, to give parents a chance to relax or go out for a few hours; _x000D_ - Spending time with the sick child, talking through their worries about their illness and treatment and/or enjoying activities;_x000D_ - Spending time with siblings, to talk through concerns and fears and to play or go out to have some fun;_x000D_ - Helping children, both the sick child and their sibling(s) to remain in school by offering transport or collecting children at the end of the schoolday and helping them with homework or school projects;_x000D_ - Practical help and support with hospital appointments, such as providing transport, collection of medication etc;_x000D_ - Liaison between parents, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other care providers, including acting as an advocate where necessary and empowering parents to obtain the information that they need;_x000D_ - Comforting children during treatment, staying with the child in hospital while parents return home to be with their other children, or while parents consult with the medical team. _x000D_ Support continues to the stage of recovery or bereavement, and beyond, for as long as the family needs it. In total the charity employs104 members of staff and is supported by approximately 380 volunteers. _x000D_ The charity's Surrey Team, based in Leatherhead, currently consists of 6 Family Support Workers and 1 Family Support Manager. The key areas which the team are working within are Caterham and Hooley in East Surrey, as well as Guildford. They provide support to children suffering from a range of illnesses, such as brain tumours, Neuroblastoma (an extracranial cancer) and Rhabdomysarcoma (a fast-growing malignant cancer). Families in need of help either request it, or are referred to the Rainbow Trust from a hospital or another partner organisation; each family is allocated to their own individual Support Worker, who will provide the support required.
