Recipient Org: Description The South East Cancer Help Centre is a small, independent charity based in Purley. We have been supporting those affected by cancer in the surrounding communities since 1983 with counselling, complementary therapies, support and information. We work closely with the NHS and it is important to stress that our therapies complement clinical treatment such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and are not an alternative. Our aim is always to give patients and family members affected by cancer an opportunity to explore ways which may help them to cope with their situation and attain their optimum quality of life. We offer a wide range of therapies including massage, reiki, reflexology which help reduce stress and alleviate pain as well as an extensive range of counselling services - Individual, Couple and Family Counselling - plus Telephone Counselling for those who are unable to attend the Centre. Our services are delivered by a team of 25 highly-trained therapists, counsellors and Group Leaders. All therapists are fully qualified members of relevant professional associations which ensures that they meet or exceed agreed standards and are insured to practise. Therapists are also registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) which is a new regulatory body endorsed by the NHS. We are a membership organisation and at any one time are supporting approximately 500 members (patients and carers). Last year the number of newly-diagnosed members increased by 19% and we delivered 4500 counselling and therapy sessions. Referrals come from GP's, the Royal Marsden and other local hospitals and hospices. Members are initially offered 12 sessions of counselling and complementary therapies as well as access to our cancer support groups and group therapy sessions such as Mindfulness, Tai Chi and Yoga. Many members take advantage of our counselling services as there is an excessive demand for counselling from the NHS and waiting lists can be up to three months' long which is very hard for people to bear when they feel desperate and need immediate support. Social interaction plays a very important part in Centre life enabling people to meet others in a similar situation whether it is via our Choir, Cinema Club, Drama Group or our diverse range of Arts Activities. There is something for everyone!
