Recipient Org: Description Home-Start originally began in Leicester in 1973 with the aim being to provide free confidential and non-judgemental support to families with at least one child under 5, who are struggling to cope and need additional help. There are now over 300 Home-Start schemes across the UK, including 9 within Surrey. Home-Start UK provides guidelines and training for staff, trustees and volunteers of local schemes, as well as setting standards. _x000D_ Home-Start East Surrey (HSES) was previously known as Home-Start Redhill, Reigate & Horley, however from 1st April 2010, the charity has been operating under the new name. It is a registered charity, established in 1993, and covers the Local Authority areas of Reigate & Banstead and Tandridge. Recently the service has been expanded into Mole Valley. _x000D_ HSES are a proven provider of early help for families and receive funding from Surrey County Council, Reigate & Banstead and Tandridge. HSES works closely with health visitors, social workers and other voluntary agencies to support families who are experiencing a variety of problems such as family breakdown, ill health or disablement of parents and children, mental health problems, isolation, multiple births or financial problems. The charity recruits and trains local parents to become volunteers, providing practical help and emotional support to help build families' confidence, enabling and empowering them to overcome their problems and reducing the risk of them becoming more involved with statutory agencies. The Home-Start model relies on an effective relationship being established between volunteer and family, matched and supported by an experienced Co-ordinator. Volunteers are recruited from a variety of backgrounds, all with parenting experience._x000D_ Last year Home Start East Surrey supported 120 families and 178 children.. The charity has over 50 volunteers, is governed by 9 Trustees and employs 5 part-time members of staff to co-ordinate and supervise the home-visiting volunteers. These include a Scheme Manager, an Administrator and two Co-ordinators.
