Recipient Org: Description Established in 1994 as FamilyLine Surrey, this is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee based in Leatherhead, whose mission is to support families to harness their own strengths to deal with their problems. The object of the charity is to preserve and protect the physical and psychological health, and relieve the needs of children, in particular by facilitating the capacity of families to care for their children, and by preventing cruelty to or maltreatment of children. In 2012 the charity became known as FamilyLine (FL), to reflect the fact that some calls were taken from outside of the Surrey boarders. The core services are the provision of an email support service and two free helplines, largely operated by volunteers. These are 'FamilyLine' for all issues whether family related or not, and 'I Need Help' ensuring young people across Surrey have a safe place to talk through the complex challenges they face. The helpline service is open weekdays from 9am to 5pm and an evening call-back service is also offered. Volunteers responding to calls are trained to deal with specific subjects that are of concern to callers, such as domestic abuse and drug/alcohol misuse. Many callers gain increased confidence in the value of their own choices which empowers them to take the next steps. The charity also holds a database of local and national support organisations to which callers can be signposted. FamilyLine has 2 part time staff, and 37 volunteers including 9 Trustees.
