Recipient Org: Description | Our purposes are to provide relief to children whose lives have been affected by sexual abuse, and to provide relief to the parents and carers of sexually abused children. We do this by offering therapeutic treatment services for victims of sexual abuse up to 21 years and by the provision of a service to secondary victims (these are the siblings of victims and also children with a parent who has abused other children) and by the provision of advice, information and guidance to parents and carers to assist their understanding of the reasons for their child's reactions and behaviours so as to enable them to respond appropriately. We help them to cope with their own emotional responses and to enable them to understand how they can keep their children safe form sexual abuse in the future. The process is that when a child discloses sexual abuse, a professional refers the family to us. Following a specialist child sexual abuse worker meets with the family to undertake a thorough psychological and emotional assessment of the child's mental wellbeing, from which a bespoke and individual treatment plan is formulated. The plan will be delivered by 1:1 sessions with the specialist worker and child over an average of 10 weeks, some need much more time due to the level of their traumas. All children coming into our services will be suffering from some level of mental ill-health, they may be depressed, isolated, self harming, feeling angry, confused and frightened. Some may suffer from hypervigilance (on the alert all the time) and have flashbacks and nightmares. The child will be helped to make sense of what happened to them, learn that they are not to blame, and develop skills and strategies for coping and their futures. They may join in group work of 10 weeks. Parents receive advice, information and guidance concurrently with the child's treatment services, so that they are better able to manage their child's emotions and behaviours attached to the sexual abuse. Parents are taught how to keep their child safe. Following the closure of the NSPCC in Ipswich November 2016, this charity has taken on work with children and young people identified as demonstrating inappropriate sexual behaviours towards other children. This work requires a very thorough assessment of the child's environment, with a bespoke treatment plan being formulated. The work with the child will likely be weekly for one year or thereabouts. These children are re-educated so that they do not go on to perpetrators of sexual abuse but develop into adults with a good quality of life. If they are not re-educated they may go onto have lives of crime, which will be a drain on the public purse and be destructive to relationships they build. |
