Recipient Org: Description A group of local residents who formed Canvey Bay Watch to tidy up Thorney Bay on Canvey Island. Thorney Bay was in an appalling condition and visitors had stopped coming to this once thriving resort. We started Oct 2014 with 8 volunteers as the work progressed more came on board and the more we were able to achieve. We meet every Tuesday with at least 12 turning out, whatever the weather and do whatever is necessary to maintain Thorney Bay. We remove weeds including seaweed, clean and sweep the walkways. Painted the seawall blue and added two murals. Planted either side of the access ramp with a welcome sign by the car park. Created a Garden by the entrance with a welcome sign and Notice Board. Installed 60 sponsored recycled benches & 6 sponsored recycled Picnic tables. Installed 7 very large part CIF grant part sponsored plant pots with Palms and Bay trees. To promote ourselves we attend many local functions to raise funds, we entered the Carnival, achieving 2nd place last year and 1st place this year. We are all volunteers who give up our time and efforts at our own expense for the good of the area we call home. Any money for things that don't come free has to come from sponsors or grants. We would now like to install a Disabled Beach Access path with Wheelchair Bays. This would allow wheelchair users access out onto the beach where they could sit close to family etc. It will be a permanent concrete structure installed by a local approved builder who has quoted £2,500 inc VAT and disabled signage. The local Castlepoint Council have been informed and have no objections. We have three local councillors in the group which helps (our Chairman and myself included) but we stress we are residents first as we live here too.
