Recipient Org: Description The ethos and overall aim of the Golden-Oldies Charity is to brighten the lives of older isolated people and give them opportunities to get out, meet others, make friends and enjoy social events - 'something to look forward to'. Launched 12 years ago in the West Country with just 4 sessions there are now over 150 across England and Wales (Goldies Cymru). Our work has developed across the Essex area in recent years and all sessions are listed on our website www.golden-oldies.org.uk/where. We are supported by over 400 volunteers and there are now 53 England and Wales session leaders whose dedication to the charity has enabled us to go forward. In Essex our work is led by retired Anglican Minister Rob Cadman who lives in Braintree and is supported by a growing number of dedicated session leaders and volunteers. At the heart of our work are monthly daytime sing and smile sessions as well as special events and participation in our award-winning intergenerational programme. The Golden-Oldies Charity won the 2018 National Lottery Awards with our WW1 project / Educational Category. We plan to develop our primary schools project in Essex in the months ahead. Jackie Pick, Headteacher Springfield Primary School, Chelmsford; “When schools open their doors to older people it is difficult to judge which generation benefits the most. It is wonderful to see the benefits when experience, wisdom and knowledge are shared with our older people.” Feedback from attendees clearly shows that 'Goldies plays a very important part in the lives of many lonely older people'. A recent study on our work is available and can be sent on request. Our Patron is Sir Cliff Richard and we have a continuing programme to develop our sessions across England and Wales in the years ahead. The growth of our charity clearly illustrates the need for daytime social activities for older isolated people. We have listed below our partners in this project, many organise coffee mornings and social meeting opportunities but few (if any) include activity and social singing opportunities. Cllr Jon de Vries, Deputy Mayor of Chelmsford City Council supports this application. He says; “The Goldies Charity fills the much-needed gap in its offer of daytime social ‘get togethers’. I have attended the sessions and have seen quite clearly the joy that people get from a good old-fashioned sing-along and also the opportunities that people have to make new friendships.” We link with all of our partners as well as Town Councils and age-support organistions in the promotion of our sessions, where they are, dates, times etc. Derrick is a carer for his wife Julie – they attended a Goldies session Chelmsford in July 2018 “We sang a song today that Julie and I danced to the very first time we met. What happy, happy memories.” N comes with her sister as her carer to the session at Braintree library. N has been blind since her teens and is wheelchair bound. N’s passion is the pop music of her youth, although she has few social skills and cannot read Braille, she can remember the date and artist of many recordings from the 1960's. Having attended Goldies for a couple of years N has learnt to take her turn at choosing songs rather than being over demanding and to respect the needs of other group members. Most positively N now uses the percussion instruments provided and is therefore always able to take part even when her memory no longer serves her with the words she is unable to read. Her carer always expresses thanks for what Goldies has done for N who looks forward to the sessions with joy “You are so kind to N” she says every session. Barbara and Vivienne love to interact with each other at Finch Court, Ongar Epping Essex, regarding choosing the songs and memories these evoke, the banter as they bounce off each other is really enjoyable for all at this session, we have received many thankful comments on how much they look forward to Goldies sessions. The Fivefields Court Colchester Essex a lovely group who really enjoy the interaction and singing, especially when leader Ray interacts with Peter who is blind and cannot read braille, Ray says the song and Peter replies with the artist and the year, what an incredible memory! South Woodham Ferrers where most members of this group are affected by dementia. Carer Debbie said ‘Wow, it was the first session and we were all up and dancing - lets arrange more sessions’. We plan to increase our daytime Sing & Smile sessions in Essex, by adding a further 10. These will include the introduction of a new Memory Cafe for those living with dementia. We will respond to requests from a number of organisations… these include Greenfields HA, The Mulberries and others. Salvation Army Braintree, Genesis and Notting Hill HA, Finch Court Chipping Ongar and Fivefields Court Colchester and others. Parkinsons Society Harlow, Braintree Library, Coggeshall Library, Sible Hedingham Library, Larchwood Dementia care home, Earls Colne, The Tabor Centre Braintree, Autumn Leaves Community Centre Tiptree, Halstead Hall Halstead, Stow Health Care, Croft House Great Dunmow, Riverdale Care Home Braintree Westgate Health care, Broomfield Hospital Chelmsford Early onset dementia group, The Hailey Centre, Sawbridgeworth, Braintree Nursing Home, Age Concern Southend, The Link Club, Writtle, Action for Family Carers, Maldon, South Woodham Ferrers Town Council, Mencap Essex, Writtle Patients Dementia Group, Abbotts Care centre, Harlow, The New Deanery, Bocking and Chinneries Court, Braintree. We involve those people who attend our daytime Sing&Smile sessions. Obviously many are frail and we are sensitive to this fact when we ask for the feedback from themselves and their carers. We use songbooks which are the specific choices of those who attend and this is one positive way that we involve everybody in our development.
