Recipient Org: Description Contact the Elderly is the only charity solely dedicated to relieving long term loneliness of people aged 75 and over and to providing a sustainable solution to social isolation. Our team of volunteers in Bristol organise Sunday afternoon tea parties for the most vulnerable and isolated members of the community. Our volunteer drivers use their own cars to collect their older guests and accompany them to a tea party held at a volunteer hosts’ home. The guests are welcomed as if they were family, and the tea parties replicate as near as possible the hospitality they would receive from their friends and family. The parties are a simple but hugely effective prevention and cure for social isolation and our older guests often feel an increase in their self confidence and an improved sense of mental and physical wellbeing. Our work is recognised by statutory services as reversing the effect of depression caused by loneliness and reducing older people’s dependency on primary health services.
