Recipient Org: Description | Merseyside Water Rescue was formed to preserve life in and around water, specifically at the south Liverpool Docks. We operate a voluntary safety boat at the south Liverpool Docks every Friday & Saturday evening, between the hours of 8pm and midnight. We aim to be there in those vital few minutes between a person entering the water and the arrival of the emergency services when the risks to life are greatest through cold water shock and drowning. Our volunteers are trained in boat handling, first aid, search and rescue techniques and communications. Our charity was formed in 2018 by a group of search and rescue volunteers who realised there was nothing in place at the south Liverpool docks and people were losing their lives, so formed a charity to address the problem. The RLNI & Marine Fire One (Merseyside Fire Rescue) operate in the river itself, they have the powerful boats able to cope with the conditions. The Coastguard & Police must launch a boat once arrived at the docks, the length of time taken means a body recovery is the most likely outcome. Within 6 months we had a charity number, bank account, risk assessments and a committee, and with the support of the Canal and River Trust we began our live duty nights in time for Christmas 2018. We have carried out paid safety boat cover for Liverpool City Council at The River Festival, Armed Forces Day & the River of Light (pre-Covid) in addition to our duty nights and they have been valuable sources of revenue for us. More recently, we provided safety boat cover for At The Waterfront Festival at the Pier Head. We are the only safety boat at the dock and we have saved lives. |
