Recipient Org: Description We are a group of volunteers, supported by Parkinson's UK to run a support group for people in our local community who have Parkinson's Disease and their partners/carers. People with Parkinson's (PWP) often suffer from depression and anxiety as one of their many varied symptoms. Due to poor mobility, and low mood, they often suffer from isolation as they hide away from society. Our support group enables PWP to meet up with others in a similar situation to themselves for fun activities and mutual support. We facilitate day trips, raise funds through events such as Beetle Drive or Golf Day, and organise social meetings and events. An increasingly important part of our role is to provide exercise activities which help temporarily relieve the symptoms of Parkinson's (both physical and mental symptoms). The exercise classes we run involve specific movements to improve mobility but also to raise mood levels. This part is equally important for the partners or carers of PWP who have often lost part of their own involvement in society due to their caring role. Attendance at our groups took a severe knock during Lockdown but numbers are rising again as our members gain more confidence in getting out of their homes. We still work hard to encourage more of our members back into meeting together to improve their quality of life. The feedback that we get from our members is heart-warming and we see and hear about the improvement in mental and physical health during many sessions.
