Recipient Org: Description The Brain Charity supports people living with neurological conditions to live longer, healthier, happier lives. There are over 600 known neurological conditions, which affect the brain, spine and nervous system. Some are common and well-known, such as dementia, stroke and MS. Others, like Alice in Wonderland syndrome, are much rarer and only affect a few people in the UK. For those diagnosed with these rare conditions, finding support can be difficult and anxiety inducing. The Brain Charity is the only organisation in the UK which supports people living with all neurological conditions. Our core services include: Information and Advice: We provide practical advice on wide-ranging issues that impact people with neurological conditions, including understanding and managing their condition, supporting with welfare benefits applications and advising on employment rights. Emotional Support: Clients and their carers can access free one-to-one and group counselling sessions with our trained counsellors, in person or over the phone. We also operate a telephone befriending service to reach socially isolated clients across Merseyside. Social Activities: We run a wide range of activities every week in our centre, including sports, to arts and crafts and music sessions. These offer our clients the opportunity to socialise and learn new skills in a safe, judgement-free space with peers who understand their experience of living with neurological conditions. Campaigning: We campaign for an inclusive society where stigma and isolation are replaced by compassion and understanding. Our most recent campaign and report ‘It’s all in your head’ launched in the Houses of Parliament in September 2023 and shares findings about the difficulties of getting a neurological condition diagnosis. Carer’s Advocacy: Our Carer’s Advocacy team support carers across Merseyside, including helping carers balance caring commitments with other responsibilities, finding suitable equipment and adaptations, and preparing for important meetings including hearings and health appointments.
