Recipient Org: Description SafeNet Vision: A future where everyone can live safe, happy & healthy lives free from abuse, violence & exploitation in their homes, streets and communities. Our Mission: Survivors come from all walks of life, and so do we. Our lived experience enhances our empathy and compassion, which is crucial to our values and beliefs, our knowledge, and the quality of our support services. We raise awareness of domestic abuse, and we work collaboratively to deliver specialist domestic abuse support services so that women, men, trans/non binary and child survivors can live increasingly positive, safer, healthier lives, leading to safer communities and neighbourhoods for every one of us. We support victims and survivors every day, using inclusive, ethical, trauma-informed approaches to prevent domestic abuse/further harm and support recovery from the trauma of abuse. Our Services SafeNet (est.1976) is a Domestic Abuse charity delivering support to victims and survivors across the North West of England. We provide emergency accommodation for survivors and their families fleeing abuse and step-down temporary accommodation for those survivors who are ready for the next stage in their recovery journey and require less intensive support. Alongside this we have services throughout Lancashire for Domestic Abuse clients in the heart of communities who require support while remaining in their own homes. Additionally we have increased accessibility to our services by setting up an Online Chat platform which can be accessed 7 days a week, 365 days a year. SafeNet has kept over 20,000 women, men and children safe from further harm over the last 48 years, and we can be supporting 600 adults and 150 children throughout all of our services at any one time. Since 2019 SafeNet has been the lead provider for Lancashire CC to deliver short-term emergency accommodation for survivors of domestic abuse. We work with delivery partners across Lancashire to ensure that survivors accessing our services receive high quality support which meets their individual needs. On average women in our refuges are with us for just over 4 months. We support clients with all areas of need connected to their Domestic Abuse recovery journeys, including specialist Domestic Abuse (DA) group work and safety priorities, but also with physical and mental health needs, housing and resettlement, financial, budgeting and debt, parenting support, legal issues, immigration and social networks. Preventative and Early Intervention work Across Lancashire, together with our delivery partners, we deliver Healthy Relationships programmes to schools. This is an area that we see as a priority for prevention work. Another focus in our awareness raising and prevention work is delivering external training. Our dedicated Training team are experienced in writing bespoke domestic abuse training to a wide range of agencies. We hope to further develop both of these key areas of service delivery. Service Development SafeNet prioritises service development in response to need and have regularly adapted services and created new projects to manage these changing needs. Complex Needs Clients Our experience and monitoring of clients’ data provided conclusive evidence that survivors with complex needs, such as substance misuse, mental health diagnoses or offending needs, were being referred to DA services in increasing numbers. Many DA services were unable to accept referrals from complex needs clients, particularly in refuge settings and these survivors often struggled to access appropriate support. This created huge safety concerns for these survivors potentially putting them at greater risk of harm. As a direct response to identifying this need, SafeNet opened Jane’s Place in Burnley in 2017 – our first purpose built DA refuge dedicated to supporting women with complex needs alongside their need for DA recovery. This project provides 15 self-contained units of accommodation for women and their children. Due to the huge oversubscription of these units, SafeNet continues to identify further units of accommodation throughout our other services to dedicate to survivors of DA with complex needs. Women only spaces While both men and women experience domestic abuse, our experience has found that the vast majority of the survivors we support are still women – in 2023 93% of clients were women. This is reflected in our units of accommodation where 93% of bed spaces are dedicated to women only. • SafeNet refuge services only employ women to work in women only spaces. • Only women visitors are allowed to visit residents in women-only spaces. • Men attending buildings for repairs or services are accompanied at all times by a staff member, and residents are informed in advance of the work arrangements ie men on site.
