| Recipient Org: Description | Our founder Zaynab started her training aged 15 learning Muay Thai kickboxing. She is an athlete, self-defence instructor, mountaineer, inspirational speaker and founder of Z Defence Academy. We are a BAME women-led Charity dedicated to helping women in Blackburn who face seemingly impossible barriers find a way to live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives. Our website is: https://zsdefenceacademy.co.uk The objects of the CIO are to: • Advance the education and training for the public benefit in self-defence techniques in order to raise awareness of protection and personal safety • The promotion of community participation in healthy recreation for the public benefit through the provision of facilities to participate in sports and activities capable of promoting personal health and fitness – facilities means land, buildings, equipment, access to coaching and organising sporting activities We started off promoting self-defence classes for women across Blackburn. Z Defence Academy (ZDA) has since established a reputation locally as a safe space for women to meet, connect and support each other. We listen to people needs and lifestyle requirements, contributing to better physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. We raise awareness of self-help, healthy eating and cooking, nutrition, exercise, menopause cafe. Our work has proved instrumental in post-COVID recovery supporting women with poor mental health, motivation and improving how women feel and see themselves, providing pathways to leading positive healthy lives through sports, outdoors, physical activity, volunteering and education. The values that we work to and strive to achieve are:- • HEALTH – Physical, wellbeing, nutrition, active lifestyle • EDUCATION – Growth mindset, knowledge, attainment, employment • ENVIRONMENT – Community cohesion, quality of life, access to services • VOLUNTEERING – Skills training, experience, leadership We run activities 5 days a week Mon-Wed including Sat and Sunday. We deliver 12-15 hours per week through community centres across Blackburn and Lancashire. Our portfolio of activities include kickboxing/mixed martial arts, self-defence fitness sessions, boxing, yoga, zumba. Saturdays are dedicated to longer activities including spa days and mindfulness, walks/hiking and outdoor pursuits. Sundays are 2hour endurance training - Blackbelt Warrior. Our membership has grown to 250+women. ZDA is well-known across all agencies within Blackburn with Darwen for its pro-active person-centered approach. Within the organisation there is clear and compassionate leadership; these individuals are all volunteers who freely give up their time to support women and we do not recruit any staff except for freelance instructors to deliver specific projects. Volunteers within ZDA help people to continue their journey of recovery and all equally valued and empowered to make a difference in people’s lives - working with women with wide ranging and multi-complex needs and issues - who may be domestic abuse survivors, isolated and suffering from loneliness, who are low in confidence and self-esteem, have body image issues or have poor mental health. ZDA respond to the needs at first hand and offer a bespoke, specialist service – offering the benefit of their experience and expertise to help others in need. We are open minded and willing to try new ways of working for the benefit of local people who are vulnerable. From time-to-time individuals are admitted who were referred to from third party services to get physically fit and healthy. When these women work with us they completely change their attitude towards life, become confident, more resilient and empowered. The Charity has won multiple awards including most recently Charity of the Year at the She Inspires Awards (Nov 2023), Finalist in Active Lancashire Awards for contribution to health and wellbeing (Nov 2023), Nomination for Street Games Awards (Nov 2023), Health and Wellbeing award for Blackburn with Darwen Sports Council (July 2023), UCLAN Community Volunteer of the Year (May 2023), East Lancs winners at the 2022 British Muslim Awards. Lancashire police, Telegraph news, Lancashire & South Cumbria Health Care Partnership (NHS), UCLAN university and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council have all highlighted the amazing work that our team provide. ZDA is a respected, effective, forward-thinking organisation that invests in its volunteers to enable them to provide the highest attainable standard of care and support every single day. We are a vital link and key player within the multi-agency partnerships of Blackburn with Darwen and have been praised very highly by Mark Winstanley chief superintendent, divisional Commander, and Andrea Barrow chief superintendent for Lancashire Constabulary. |
