| Recipient Org: Description | Together NI are a food and necessity bank, a shared space to combat isolation and loneliness and a parent and toddler group. We also are training in benefit advice and offer wrap around counselling and befriending services which are open to the public. Since the introduction of welfare reform, there has been a huge increase in financial poverty and use of food banks. Our shared spaces offered access to non-perishable food packs every week to registered members, who range in age from 18 with no upper age limit. Generally those who attend are in receipt of benefits, are members of the older generation, have health issues or are in financial difficulty. Together NI offers a befriending service in that we ‘keep in touch’ and offer a friendly chat to those who register with us. Before the outbreak, members can call into the hall for a cup of tea and a chat while we make up non-perishable food packs for them for the week ahead. Often these people do not have many others to talk to in their lives and as a result rely heavily on the socialisation from us. Our parent and toddler group has been temporarily closed but typically it ran every Tuesday and offered safe indoor play sessions for parents, guardians, grandparents and their children. It offered a play experience within a shared environment which was an opportunity to socialise for both parent and the child in the years before a child starts school. Often these years can be isolating given there are limited opportunities to socialise with others who understand the demanding challenges of parenthood or that looking after a young growing mind entails. Snack is provided for all including tea and coffee. |
