Recipient Org: Description U3A Foyle was set up in December 1989 by a group of local retirees who believed that retirement should not be a finale but continue to be a time for fun, fitness and learning. U3A stands for University of the Third Age - The Third Age being the stage of Retirement after First Age of Childhood and Second Age of Working life. Based in Gransha Park U3A Foyle has 1052 members enrolled for the 2019-2020 season. U3A Foyle usually delivers over 125 classes, courses and activities from Arts and Crafts, Languages, Cards & Games, Physical Activities Computing and Social & Recreational Activities. You can join up to do as many activities as you like. The choice is there from Art to Zumba! There are tutors engaged for many courses and classes but there are also many activities led by members which incur no charge including Badminton, Bowls, Gardening Clubs, Genealogy club, Portuguese, Walking Groups and Cycling Groups, Tea Dances, Ukulele Groups and Folk Club. This is very much the U3A model of self-help, shared learning and peer learning. The only prerequisite for joining U3A is that you must be retired. All activities aim to keep our older people fit and healthy, happy and engaged. There is a huge Volunteering aspect to U3A Foyle and members are encouraged to get involved in some aspect of volunteering - whether it is sharing your skills with a group of members; leading one of the walking groups; delivering a lecture on Local History; or helping out in the front office, in the building or on one of the organising committees.
