Recipient Org: Description The aim of our association is to address the educational, economic, environmental, cultural and social needs of the Feeny area. To encourage and inspire the people in the community to develop their skills, promote good mental and physical well being to ensure a better quality of life. To promote the village and surrounding area to visitors and tourists. To provide services and activities to our community which would be otherwise unavailable to them, due to our rural location, lack of facilities and the poor transport links to the nearest towns. Our organisation aims to address the day to day issues and problems which our community faces and ensure that all members of our community can feel a sense of belonging and self worth regardless of religion, race, age, gender or ability. Our association embarks on a wide range of projects each year to provide for the needs of our area. We are very much user led and adapt our programmes to suit the current economic & social climate at any given time. We currently have the following activities ongoing:- Youth Group – Providing a weekly programme of events and activities for Junior & Senior youth groups from ages 7 to 18 years. Bringing in a range of external specialist facilitators to provide information and improve knowledge and skills to help the young people improve self confidence, make better choices for themselves, reduce the feeling of isolation, improve health & well being, and have fun along the way. Older Peoples Group – Luncheon Club, Bingo, Games, information sessions on a range of topics including ageing well, mental and physical well being, eating healthy – cooking on a budget or cooking for one, getting out and about especially in the bad weather, home and personal safety. Our local pharmacist, health professionals, and complimentary therapists visit to also help with health & well being. Children’s Music Class – 1 evening per week & Sat Morning. Over the past number of years we have through our Music class established a traditional group who play at functions in our centre. They have also competed both as solo musicians and in groups and have been quite successful in this. We hope to continue this programme and expand it to include a variety of instruments/tutors available in our centre in the future. Children’s Arts & Crafts – Saturday morning – Each week we have up to 48 primary school children come in the door excited to see what the activity is. We pick a different theme each week; the children use a variety of materials eg. Paints, wood, cardboard, wallpaper, lace, chalk, glitter, jewellery, to design and produce their interpretation of the theme. They produce some beautiful work which they can take home or display in the centre. Children’s Dance Club – 1 evening per week (3 sessions for different age groups). This class proved so popular that we divided it into 3 age groups to accommodate all the children who wanted to attend. The children have great fun at eh class whilst also being physically active for a full hour. At the end of each term parents, grandparents, family and friends are invited in to watch a fabulous dance display by the children. This programme was extended to include an adult session on the request of parents and local residents. Parent & Toddler Group - We now have a vibrant group, with lots of new parents & children who have joined as they realise the benefits of getting children socially involved and interacting with other children, Messy play, Water Play, Music & Dance form part of this programme. Women’s Group – Following a Health programme for women the participants have continue to meet on a weekly basis and participated in a range of programmes since including Cook It, Cancer Awareness, Mindfulness, Yoga & Zumba, Community Pharmacy Programme – which included information on medication, family health, Complimentary therapies. Walking For Health Programme – Wed Morning & Thursday Evenings. Our local qualified walking guide facilitates these sessions and encourages people to get out and about to see and enjoy the country side. The group has also joined in walks with other groups and in recent weeks have visited a Donegal walking group on one of their walks. This is something they are keen to do in the future as they enjoyed meeting new people who also enjoyed walking not only to improve health but also for pleasure. Yoga Class – Tuesday Evening for all levels of ability. Volunteering – We offer a wide range of volunteering opportunities within our group, where volunteering have the opportunity to learn a range of skills, these include Management Committee, Fundraising, Planning & Implementation of programmes, Budgeting, Community Centre Management, Childcare/supervision, Working with older people. The benefits of volunteering to both our group and the volunteer are immense and we are lucky to have a diverse range of people willing to get involved. Many of our previous volunteers have commented that they felt the experience gained within our organisation had helped them on to the next stage eg; Further Education, University and into the work place. We have put two of our newest volunteers forward to the Northern Ireland Youth Council where they are learning how to represent their community and peers, getting involved in discussions and addressing issues that affect them. Through this they are also participating in an accredited leadership programme which they are enjoying and learning so much from. We have recently completed a cost analysis as to added value in monetary term our volunteers time gives on an annual basis. It is estimated that the value is approx £50,000 per year. Our Community office is opens four days per week providing the community with services such as Internet access, printing, faxing, photocopying. Local residents also use the office to express their needs and concerns and work with us to see how these can be addressed.
