Recipient Org: Description We are applying for support for the Black Box Trust, Moon Base Projects that supports people with learning disabilities. The Black Box Arts & Cultural venue opened it doors in 2006, and since then has established itself as a vital, vibrant component of the Belfast City Centre community and beyond; providing an accessible and adaptable space for grassroots and high-profile activity by individuals and organisations. The Black Box is incubatory, innovative and has nurtured many festivals, individual artists & performers, live events, and developed a number of pioneering disability arts programmes. The Black Box is unique in its support for alternative and experimental art forms and in its delivery of a range of artistic programming, including live music, literature, comedy, film, science, visual art, live art, cabaret, and everything in between- over 700 events a year, 27 annual festivals, all attracting diverse audiences of upwards of 60,000 people to the City Centre venue. Organisational Aims; - To advance citizenship and community development by supporting social and community infrastructure, promoting social inclusion and volunteering through engagement with arts; - To promote the effectiveness of charities and the effective use of charitable resources by providing resources for administrative purposes including event organisation and festival launches; - To advance creative education in the arts and drama by fostering, improving and encouraging new developing artistic talent to improve individual and group competences and skills; - To promote relief of those in need by reason of age or disability by providing facilities, developing and operating programme to engage with persons of 16 years or over, older adults advocacy and encourage the use of their creative abilities. The Black Box has a strong brand synonymous with dynamic, quality programming, and activity supports & promotes inclusion and removing barriers for all to access, engage and experience arts, culture and social activity. As an example of this, for the past ten years we have designed and delivered a range of programmes for and by people with learning disabilities. This includes Black Moon disco, now in its tenth year, an over 18’s night that is part of the Stay Up Late campaign that believes everyone has the right to a night out and promotes an authentic club experience in a cool contemporary and positive environment, BPM DJ academy which runs alongside Black Moon, Mini Moon sensory disco for young children with disability ages (0-7), autism friendly film screenings with Black Moon Film Club, and weekly specialised drop -in activities including 'Creating Connections' arts-based activities, Women Carers Project and Moon Music music group through our Moon Base Projects unbrella. Our core ethos and openness means we are an accessible and important testing ground and over the past fourteen years nurtured the development of many of Belfast’s key festivals eg, CQAF, Outburst Queer Arts Festival, NI Science Festival, Brilliant Corners Festival of Jazz, Comedy Lab. With a unique brand of cutting-edge arts, grassroots experiments and radical inclusion, we’re home to the most vital and exciting music, performance, film, comedy and ideas Northern Ireland has to offer. We’re not just the go-to space for the best festivals and brightest thinkers, we’re a hothouse for emerging artists, organisers and cultural activists locally and across the country. During this time our venue is closed due to COVID-19 but it is crucial for us to remain connected with the communities we support who were socially isolated before the Pandemic and are now even more cut off from society and social interaction. The majority of our group members are over 50. We are seeking support to stay connected through regular weekly online sessions and arts-based workshops. Moon Base Projects provides activities Monday - Friday. We also have events, performances and trips that take place on evenings and weekends. We provide a safe, positive environment for group member's to express themselves creatively through Music, Visual Art, Dance, Movement, Drama, Poetry, Story-telling, film and encouraging group members to learn more about Social Media and online platforms. At Moon Base, group members have the opportunity to socialise, meet new people, relax, work on their team building skills, communication skills, increase confidence in a social setting and learn more about their local Community and beyond. We also emphasise what people CAN do and focus on a person's ability rather than disability. The Black Box Trust have a strong record of providing a democratic space where all are welcome and where holistic approaches are appreciated and encouraged. We have recently run programs with Libraries NI, such as 'Digital Citizen' where the group learnt; how to be safe online, how to access games and Music and create videos and their own Cards and Virtual images. We are starting to host Zoom sessions for our group members because of Covid - 19 and hope to continue to do so for the duration of self-isolation. So far we have hosted and led a Women's Carers Workshop through Zoom, our first ‘Creating Connections' session which was exploring poetry and we also had a meeting with our volunteer team. It is vital that we are able to stay in touch with our group members at this time and reach out to as many of them as possible. We have also made Activity Packs that we have posted out to those who do not have internet access and emailed out to others.
