Recipient Org: Description Cancer Lifeline was set up in Oct 1999 in response to the lack of accessible support services for those trying to cope with a cancer diagnosis, in some of the most deprived communities in North Belfast. A cancer diagnosis can bring with it extreme feelings of fear, isolation, anxiety, distress and helplessness. Cancer Lifeline’s community based, professionally delivered services, offer a vital local support system. Helping people to build their skills, confidence, capacity and coping mechanisms to be able to cope better emotionally, physically and mentally with the illness. The organisation has a unique strong user led focus which aims to tackle poor mental health and wellbeing and embrace community participation in order to; i) Improve the health and well-being of those affected by cancer through the provision of a range of information and support services. Examples include peer support, hospital and home visits, welfare benefits advice, complementary therapies, counselling, bereavement support, advocacy support etc. ii) Address inequalities in health by facilitating innovative health promotion work at the heart of local communities where it is needed most e.g. stress management, coping skills workshops, mindfulness, relaxation, nutrition, fatigue management, physical activity programmes, health awareness, networking and group support etc . iii) Promote partnership working in order to advance the needs of those affected by cancer and to bring about improvements in health service delivery ensuring that individuals’ holistic health needs are addressed and not just their physical health needs. Services are targeted at the North Belfast Community where it is needed most. North Belfast has one of the highest incidences of cancer in comparison to other parts of the city. This is compounded by the high levels of deprivation that North Belfast experiences. People who benefit from the services are individuals living with a cancer diagnosis and their carers / families, targeting the most vulnerable who are often marginalised from services. The user led focus is central to the ethos of the organisation. The voluntary Board are all individuals who are living with cancer and are committed to this organisational, strong, user led focus, development of community capacity and promotion of active citizenship. Forging productive partnerships, between the statutory health service and the community and voluntary sector. The organisation Steering Group is made up of a range of key statutory and community health professionals who meet on a quarterly basis and give their time freely to Cancer Lifeline. Their key role is to give guidance, support and direction to the organisation as well as foster cross sectoral partnership working in a common bid to improve the well-being of users and to work toward overall improvements in health services. Participants include GPS, BHSCT staff, Practice Nurses, other Cancer Charities, Lighthouse, Healthy Living Centres etc. Individual sessional professionals such as nurses, OT’s, Complementary Therapists, Counsellors, etc. help Cancer Lifeline deliver a tailored programme of support services. Users who benefit from the project are continually involved in various events to raise the profile of the organisation’s work e.g. outreach stalls, information events, talk to groups. The work of volunteers is valued and encouraged as a key resource. Ongoing training, support and information are provided to enable volunteers to develop their capacity and skills and to gain recognition for their effective contribution to Cancer Lifeline’s work. Cancer Lifeline has been working with the Belfast City Council to redevelop and expand our current project base. Funding from the Belfast City Council, Belfast Investment Fund has provided us additional ground floor accommodation, and lift access to the upper floor, enabling all of our members to access all areas. This new building redevelopment will see us fit for purpose in the next phase of Cancer Lifeline’s journey, of reaching out to support people affected by cancer in North Belfast.
