Recipient Org: Description WOMEN’STEC is an innovative charity based in North Belfast. It was born out of a recognised need for training and employment for women in industries traditionally associated with men, with historically low female representation, including construction, engineering and IT (STEM). WOMEN’STEC supports economically inactive or unemployed women to address the barriers that prevent them from moving into employment or training and embarking on a career in an industry which is filled with lucrative opportunities for women. Our youth programme, ‘Promoting Opportunities #notjustforboys’ targets young girls who are at risk of becoming NEETs or entering low-income employment, to engage in the industries non-traditional to women where higher paid jobs exist. The programme aims to increase awareness of opportunities for girls and inspire them to explore these opportunities as viable career pathways. WOMEN'STEC provide a holistic experience for some of the hardest to reach women across Northern Ireland, particularly in the greater Belfast area. As well providing opportunities for skills training in a variety of trades (plumbing, electrics, carpentry, tiling, painting & decorating etc.), we also provide personal development courses, job support (CV & interview skills, completing job applications, advice and guidance etc.), community relations activities and importantly, we offer free childcare for all our students through our partnership with Wee Chicks CIC, who have a permanent creche on site. We offer the safe and comfortable space for women to come and meet new people, learn, improve their confidence, develop their skills and receive practical support to helping them improve their lives. We want women who are economically inactive or unemployed and have experienced some sort of issues or challenges, to feel confident and ready to find employment, paid work or further training. We support women in all aspects of their lives that will enable them to re-enter the labour market. We do this through supporting them through practical skills training, personal development and capacity building programmes, addressing the social, mental and physical barriers of returning to employment and through developing their confidence and self-belief. Our beneficiaries tend to come from some of the most deprived areas in Northern Ireland and in some of the hardest to reach communities within Belfast, where little to no engagement / community work has been delivered. These women face many social, financial and health issues which prevent them from working. Furthermore, they are challenged with wider issues in their own communities which also affects them individually. On a personal level, many of the women we engage with include lone parents and young mothers, whose biggest barrier to entering employment is childcare and care responsibilities. Furthermore, we engage with women with low skills levels / little or no qualifications, and those with personal issues ranging from drugs and alcohol abuse to domestic violence. Our core beneficiaries are some of the hardest to reach women who are unemployed, experience a range of issues and have little / no confidence to move forward. However, they show great tenacity and resilience in wanting to change their lives. Making the first step to engaging with us shows the desire and motivation of women in difficult circumstances to make changes that will positively impact their lives and their families. As an organisation, our strengths lie in our ability to engage with women who have little / no previous engagement in community activities. We have a strong team who have a great ability to connect to our beneficiaries on a level required to ensure they are fully supported in working towards their goals. During the coronavirus pandemic, we are concerned about many of our beneficiaries who are currently engaged with us. There are single mothers who are now isolated at home with little support, vulnerable women who just took started engaging with us at WOMEN’STEC, older women who come to WOMEN’STEC for the human connection and social experiences and many more women who come to our courses and access our services because they want to improve their lives. We understand how important our services and programmes are for our beneficiaries and therefore, without being able to physically deliver services in our building, we are finding new ways to engage and support with our beneficiaries online
